Why not buy commonly available cheap particleboard or MDF furniture?

Particle board is extremely heavy and crumbles over time when knocked or jostled. It also disintegrates if exposed to water. We use no particleboard or MDF (medium density fiberboard)—all construction is wood.

Why not buy commonly available cheap particleboard or MDF furniture?	All our work is held together by screwed joinery, not staples or nails. Shelves fit into secure grooves in the sides.
Why not buy melamine furniture?	Melamine is an easily chipped, typically white plastic finish applied over low quality particleboard. We finish all built-in bookcases—you get a complete, installed product. We provide a top quality painted finish. You choose the color (including contrasting back colors, if desired). We finish by hand, not spray.

Are the backs of freestanding bookcases that face the wall finished?

No. While the back of a bookcase that is visible is of course finished, and is the same wood as the bookcase (or hardboard in the case of painted bookcases); the non-visible side is not finished and the bookcases are designed to stand against a wall.
