Arts & Crafts Bookcases
A very popular modern style of bookcases is actually an
old style of bookcase: Arts & Crafts Bookcases. The Arts and Crafts Movement
began primarily as a search for authentic and
meaningful styles for the 19th century. It was also in
reaction to the flowery styles of the Victorian period and to the "anti-person"
machine dominated production so prevalent during the Industrial Revolution.
Arts & Crafts bookcase and bookshelf proponents considered
the machine to be the root cause of many, if not most, "modern" human evils.
Therefore, some of the leaders of the Arts & Crafts
movement turned completely
away from the use of machines and towards handcraft. While Molton Bookcases
cannot claim to use only handcraft, many of our bookcases look similar to Arts
& Crafts bookcases.
